THE JAMES IRVINE FOUNDATION APPROVES GRANT FOR OTIS’ MEDIA ARTS INITIATIVE
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 24, 2008)- –Otis College of Art and Design has received a $150,000 grant from the James Irvine Foundation for the ongoing support of OTEAM and the planning of Otis Media Arts Initiative--- Since 2005, O TEAM has provided a gateway for underserved youth into higher education and the workforce. Based on the learning lessons of the last three years, Otis has a clearer understanding of how it can use its resources and expertise to deliver a sustainable program that will have a greater impact on how media and visual arts are learned and taught at a high school level. With the Media Arts Initiative, Otis will stimulate systematic change at all levels of learning and teaching of media arts.
Otis recognizes the media arts as an essential and widespread practice that combines art and design with scientific innovation. Given the high demand for innovative approaches to new media such as internet, cell phones, video games, animation, television, print radio and digital and film photography, the media arts are positioned as a momentous industry of the 21st century. Otis has established this media arts program to not only provide educators with new models of research and technologies in media arts, but to give students from all backgrounds opportunities to expand their knowledge in this critical and growing field.
