Otis Books | Seismicity Editions is a publication project of the Graduate Writing program of Otis College of Art and Design. Given the crisis in U.S. publishing and the difficulties facing new and innovative writing seeking to find its way into print, Otis' Graduate Writing program established this literary press in 2003 as an alternative to both corporate and small press publications. We are committed to publishing innovative works of contemporary fiction, poetry, essays, creative non-fiction and translation in high quality, trade paperback editions.
Production and editorial work on all of our titles is carried out by our MFA students in the context of a "publishing praxis" class under our direct supervision. Students are involved in all aspects of the press' activities, from the selection of manuscripts and reading of proofs, to communication with writers and printers and the shipping of books to our distributor. Drawing on skills they have acquired in the class, some have gone on to found small presses of their own or have taken jobs in publishing.
