"What I found startled me to the point that I almost dropped it. It was a perfectly round stone, tannish in color, a little larger than a baseball, and glued to it were two severed eagle claws, as if they were grasping the stone. Why would they leave something like this? The day had been still except for the drumming and singing at the arbor but now the wind was rising."

 

Ken McCullough is a fiction writer and a poet. He was born in Staten Island, NY but was raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland. His published works include:  Crossing Three Wildernesses (2005), Walking Backwards (2005), Obsidian Point (2003), Sacred Vows (1998), Sycamore Oriole (1991), Travelling Light (1987). McCullough has received a Pablo Neruda Award, a New Millennium Poetry Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1974), and a Minnesota Writer’s Award for Left Hand. He currently lives in Minnesota.
