Mexicali Biennial at the Ben Maltz Gallery
Opening Reception January 23, 2010, 4-6 pm

The
MexiCali Biennial 09/10 highlights work of artists from California and Mexico selected by Biennial Curators/Artists Ed Gomez ('03), Luis G. Hernandez (’03), and Amy Pederson. Working in photography, painting, sculpture, performance and new media, the artists from both sides of the border interrogate the economies of exchange underlying extant constructs of race, nationalism, art, and identity in the region, while insisting on a transgressive fluidity between media and territory. The presentation at the Ben Maltz Gallery is the culmination of a year-long exploration and discussion about the physical and political realities of crossing culture, language, and boundaries. Artists: Skip Arnold, Gustavo Artigas, Juan Bastardo, Bordermates, Anibal Catalan, Pablo H. Cobian, Jeff Chabot, Michelle Chong (’06), Fernando Corona, Fidel Hernández, Rebeca Hernández, Homeless, I.C.E. Nicholas Kersulis. Ryan Lamb, Ivan Limas, Albert Lopez, Matt McFarland (’03), Txema Novelo, Susana Rodriguez, Ernesto Rosas, Daniel Ruanova and Meli Barragan, Joaquin Segura, Gustavo Siono, Sergio Torres-Torres, Jason Wallace Triefenbach and Fundaçion Wanna Winnie.
