Mark Dean Veca

Well known for his paintings and drawings, Veca is best known for his brain-popping, large-scale installations. His improvisations are rooted in the jazz traditions of New Orleans, where his family are musicians. Veca’s inspirations include animated cartoons such as Popeye; comic books such as MAD Magazine and Zippy the Pinhead; and artists ranging from Ed Ruscha to Dr Seuss.

“Phantasmagoria” (2008), a large-scale, site-specific installation at Otis’ Ben Maltz Gallery, was described by  FlavorPill as “stepping into a psychedelic playhouse filled with surreal pop-cultural cartoons.“ A master of large-scale painting, Veca creates environments that are all-encompassing. time-lapse video (YouTube)

He has exhibited at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, PS 1 Contemporary Art Center, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.  His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Art Review, Juxtapoz, and Flash Art.

In 2010, he recreated Phantasmagoria for the Instituto Cultural
