Roberto Gil de Montes ('72, MFA Fine Arts '76), born in Guadalajara, Mexico, came to the United States in 1965. He received his MFA from Otis, and works in painting, photography, sculpture and ceramics.

Gil de Montes was included in the prestigious Hispanic Art in the US: Thirty Contemporary Painters and Sculptors which toured the country in the late 1980s. Among the themes in his figurative and landscape works are his origins in Mexico, life in Echo Park, Mexican popular art, and the tradition of retablos and ex-voto painting. Among his public art commissions is a tile fountain at Los Angeles Metro's Gateway Transit Center.
