Scott Williams(’90, Fashion Design) is global apparel designer for NIKE.
Among many other projects, Williams has been involved with the Nike Innovation team of sportswear designers who came up with the so-called "Pre-Core Vest," intended to lower an athlete's core body temperature before long races. The vest came out around the time of the 2004 Olympics, and has been an evolving technological concept since its introduction. “Less than 25 percent of your body's energy goes to moving muscles,” Williams explained to the press, “[while] over 75 percent of your body's energy goes toward regulating heat.”
Nike Innovation promoted the spate of these particular products as a secret weapon of sorts for its associated athletes, breaking with traditions and introducing something completely revolutionary into the food chain of competition. It continues to refine its various products to the point where it has now has sport-specific cooling vests, some with hoods (because the head is crucial in the regulation of body heat), though the most recent development is to swap the cooling ice with sophisticated "phase-change polymers" that are not as severe on the body.
In 2002, Williams acted as a fashion design mentor at Otis, sharing his cutting-edge knowledge base, and teaching the students about the finer points of designing for a large corporation, as well as design in general.
