xtine burrough will be the Keynote Speaker for Otis’ first K-12 Teaching Residency, a professional development retreat organized by the Artists, Community and Teaching Program and Continuing Education. Her presentation will be in Ahmanson B06 and is open to the Otis Community.
xtine burrough is a media artist and Assistant Professor of Visual Communications at California
State University, Fullerton. She is also the co-author of Digital Foundations: Intro to Media
Design with the Adobe Creative Suite (New Riders/AIGA 2009). She is informed by the history of
conceptual art and practices in the era of social-networking. Using tools common to consumer
web practices, such as databases, search engines, blogs, and applications—sometimes in
combination with popular sites like Facebook, YouTube, or Mechanical Turk, she creates web
projects and communities that foster interpretation and autonomy. xtine believes that art can
shape social experiences by mediating consumer culture and envisioning imaginary practices.
As an educator, she is interested in the art of instruction. A complete portfolio of her work can
be viewed at missconceptions.net.
The Summer 2010 K-12 Teaching Residency focuses on Media Arts and the Integration of Learning Technologies into the Arts, Math, Science and Humanities Curricula. A select group of K-12 Teachers, representing public, private and charter schools across Southern and Central California, will spend five days in professional development workshops, presentations and field trips meant to enhance and re-invigorate their teaching and creative practices.
The K-12 Teaching Residency is part of Otis’ Teaching and Learning Initiative, made possible in part by generous support from The James Irvine Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
