Opening Reception for Freeway Studies #2: Inside the Quad

With live music by Banda Filarmonica Alma del Valle, MFA Thesis exhibition by David Del Francia, and 2014 BFA Juniors Juried Exhibition. In the Ben Maltz Gallery, Bolsky Gallery, and Fine Arts 107 all located on the ground floor of the Bronya and Andy Galef Fine Arts Center.

Freeway Studies is a multi-year, contemporary art-focused curatorial project organized by Meg Linton, Director of Galleries and Exhibitions, with the assistance of Jeseca Dawson, 2012-2014 Curatorial Fellow, at the Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design.

Inside the Quad features work by 31 contemporary artists whose studios are located inside the border defined by the following freeways: I-405, I-110, I-10 and I-105. The impetus for this curatorial endeavor continues to be an effort to survey, one studio at a time, the neighborhoods and networks of artists working in Los Angeles. This dérive breaks out of existing curatorial preconceptions and knowledge to expand the analog network between curator, artist, and institution. Geographic parameters, along with word-of-mouth referrals, are used to ping-pong from studio to studio, shifting the confines of the existing paradigm. Documentation of every studio visit can be seen on the Freeway Studies Blog.
