  • Public-Library is a cross-disciplinary design studio in Los Angeles. They construct identities, concepts and experiences for brands through the practice of reduction using fundamental typographic theory and experimentation with space and form.

Ramón Coronado and Marshall Rake met as design students at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After studying, working, and exhibiting independently for many years—both stateside and internationally—their design philosophy and approach brought them back together as Public-Library in 2011.

Continuing Education Course

Digital Art Play

In this course, students learn to use an iPad or similar tablet, to expand their creativity and generate digital art forms. Participants learn to download simple user friendly art applications (apps) and are instructed in their use. Free apps provide digital crayons, markers, and paint, all immediately accessible to the participant’s fingertips. Once students have mastered the basics (opening a new file, using the various drawing/painting tools, saving or emailing the resulting artwork file, accessing a saved file) a more complex, inexpensive, art app (with layers, expanded color pallets, multiple brushes featuring opacity and size controls, image transformation options, text inclusion) is purchased and downloaded; and students receive instruction in its use. In the same way you might play a game on your phone, students develop the ability to use creative art practices for relaxation, recreation, and communication. Emphasis is on abstract and folk art styles of representation, graphic design, and sharing through visual communication. Experimentation and exploration is encouraged.

Prerequisite: Students provide their own iPad or similar tablet
