  • For decades, the Los Angeles–based artist Lita Albuquerque has blurred distinctions between Land art and Light and Space on increasingly grander scales, whether it be building installations surrounding the pyramids in Egypt or placing sculptures across Antarctica to mirror the formation of the stars. Her cosmic explorations continue with two new bodies of work that are currently being shown at Kohn Gallery in Hollywood, from January 9 through February 27, 2016, and at USC’s Fisher Museum of Art, from January 26 through April 10, 2016.

Continuing Education Course

Portfolio Preparation: Life Drawing and Painting

This course focuses on drawing and painting the human figure. Emphasis is placed on understanding and conceptualizing the body as form in space, while considering the figure as an element of composition. Using traditional drawing materials, volumetric drawing serves as the foundation for further study. Students explore painting techniques and concepts through the use of acrylic paint. Advice and direction is provided to those students preparing a portfolio for Otis or other college art programs. Includes a guest lecture by a counselor from Otis’ Admissions Office who offers information on college requirements.

Prerequisite: Basic Drawing or equivalent experience

First class meeting: 18" x 24" Smooth newsprint and/or bond paper; 18”x24” drawing board. Assorted pencils: soft charcoal, “carbon”, dark pastel, dark colored pencils (Prismacolor or Poly-Chromos). “Soft” compressed charcoal sticks; Nupastel stick (earth tone). Assorted blending “stumps” and tortillons; kneaded rubber eraser; razor blades or retractable razor knife; 1 piece #100 grit sandpaper; chamois. Materials list for painting supplies will be distributed at first meeting.

IMPORTANT:
• All students attending courses on the Goldsmith Campus must check in with Continuing Education staff in the lobby of the Ahmanson Building.
• All Portfolio Preparation students are required to submit a completed Pre-College Programs Emergency Contact Information Form, Policies and Procedures Acknowledgement of Receipt, and Photo/Video Release Form prior to admittance into the classroom. Students will not be permitted to attend without this.
• During the summer, Pre-College Programs offers a four week college immersion program, Summer of Art from July 5-July 29.
