Photographing Los Angeles

Los Angeles, one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in the world, has landscape of incredible extremes. It forcefully exhibits the chaotic results of unplanned growth, unbridled industrialization, and a population resultant of continual mass migration. In this course, students explore and photograph the myriad of landscapes that make up Los Angeles. The goal of the class is for students to express their personal perspectives on the city through photographic imagery. Students learn appropriate formats for specific subject matter and how to obtain image quality for effect. Lecture and class discussion cover urbanism, symbolism, historical and contemporary photography, and technique. Student photographs are uploaded to a course website where the group can review and critique each other’s work. Students are expected to provide their own manual camera (either digital or film), understand how to use their camera, and have basic knowledge of Photoshop. Each week the class meets in the field and explores the city of Los Angeles through walking, driving, and reading.

Prerequisite: XPHO2010 Introduction to Photography; XPHO2012 Introduction to Black and White Photography; XPHO2600 Digital Photography; or equivalent knowledge
