Eileen Cowin is an artist who sees living as a means to break boundaries, and psychology as a way to confront us with strange attitudes or to implicate us in seemingly self-imposed spatial confinements. –Art Papers April 2007 by Eve Wood

Creative Economy Event Program

Since its inception in 2007, Otis College of Art and Design's Annual Report on the Creative Economy of the Los Angeles Region has been an invaluable tool to assess the tremendous impact and influence of the area's creative sector on the economy.

In 2013, the California Arts Council awarded Otis funds to expand the report to include analysis of the entire state of California, showing how the state's economy is effected by jobs in the arts, design, education, entertainment, nonprofits, and independent creative professions, and providing a forecast for 2015. Their commitment underscores the belief that creativity is essential to California's successful workforce investment and economic development strategies. The Report is prepared by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

On February 6, 2014 at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation's Chief Economist Robert Kleinhenz presented the LAEDC's findings along with a forecast for the next five years. Other speakers included California State Senator Ted Lieu (Chair of the Joint Committee of the Arts, and Chair of the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee); Director, Western Region of the Actors Fund Keith McNutt; Otis President Samuel Hoi; California Arts Council Director Craig Watson, and Executive Director of Arts for L.A. Danielle Brazell. An addendum to this year's Otis Report is "L.A. Creates," a special report by Director, Western Region of the Actors Fund Keith McNutt, detailing the way in which deliberate, collaborative, and regional efforts can support and develop the region's creative industries.
