  • High&Low Bureau is a curatorial duo composed of Yael Messer and Gilad Reich. They curate exhibitions, film programs, performative events and publications, while engaging with a plethora of disciplines, media and modes of artistic expression.Their curatorial practice is dedicated to the exploration of artistic strategies that reflect on, and suggest alternatives to, specific social-political conditions.

  • Los Angeles is a city often described as having no center. Its art community has turned that "disadvantage" into an advantage and given itself a license for adventure. Organizations, galleries, and artists find decentralization to be an exciting option and they establish their addresses in unexpected neighborhoods and zones in the city and even beyond, in other cities and states. What are the challenges and advantages of this programmatic and conceptual strategy? What are the risks, to organization and audience alike? Is this necessary, and if so, is it sustainable?

    David Schafer is a visual and sound artist working in sculpture, sound, sound, performance, and works on paper. His work is concerned with the structures, translation, and intelligibility, of language and architecture. Schafer has shown nationally and internationally and has received several public commissions. Most recently he has had one-person shows at Studio10 gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY, and Glendale College Art Gallery, Glendale, CA.

    Sarah Manguso is the author, most recently, of The Guardians: An Elegy for a Friend, named one of the top ten books of the year by Salon. Her previous book, the memoir The Two Kinds of Decay, was named an Editors’ Choice by the New York Times Sunday Book Review and short-listed in the UK for the Wellcome Trust Book Prize and long-listed for the Royal Society Winton Prize. Her other books include the story collection Hard to Admit and Harder to Escape, and the poetry collections Siste Viator and The Captain Lands in Paradise.

    Pae White was born in 1963 in Pasadena, California. She lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her M.F.A. from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and her B.A. from Scripps College in Claremont, California. She also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Recent solo exhibition venues include Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne; galleria francesca kaufmann, Milan; the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand; the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; greengrassi, London; and 1301PE, Los Angeles.

Alum ALEX DONIS '94 was a featured artist representing US/Guatemala in the 10th Havana Biennale in Cuba from 27 March - 30 April 2009, and concurrently participated in the exhibition/project "Gender (trans)gender and the (de)generates" at the Centro Cultural Bertolt Brecht Sunday March 29. On Thursday April 2 he was on on the panel: "Masculinities in conflict" moderated by Dr. Julio César González Pagés (Cuba) and also featuring artist Argelia Bravo (Venezuela).

Alum WENDY GIVEN '02 showed her photographs in a two person exhibition entitled "Short Stories" at the Fifth Floor Gallery in Los Angeles from March 21 to April 18, 2009.

Alums WHITNEY STOLICH '02, VERONICA SOTO '05, CHRIS OATEY '06, KRISTIN DUCHARME '03, JENNIFER LANSKI '06 and KATHRIN BURMESTER '08 will show their work in an 8 person show entitled "The Edges of the West" curated by graduate Professor and Assistant Chair ANNETTA KAPON at Artower Gallery in Athens, Greece from May 20 to June 24, 2009.

Grads CROSSMAN WILKINS and BRIAN MARRIER had their thesis exhibitions at the Bolsky Gallery from March 7 to March 30, 2009. A review and photo of Crossman Wilkin's work was posted on the Reuters.com webpage on April 1st, 2009:  blogs.reuters.com...

A solo exhibition by alum MATT MACFARLAND '03 will be at HAUS in Pasadena from March 26 thru April 18, 2009.

Alum CHRIS ROWLAND '00 showed his work in a group eaxhibition at Fine Arts & Graphics Gallery from March 7 - April 25, 2009.

Alums MICHELLE ANDRADE, LORENZO HURTADO SEGOVIA, ADAM MARS, TUCKER NEEL, and JOHN WESTON, all '07, also known as the Station collective opened an installation in Long Beach with Phantom Galleries in January, and for May/June they will be doing another installation-event, in downtown LA at Raw Materials called Station Must Go, on May 9, 2009

Alum CHRIS OATEY is showing his large installation "Fountain" at the Tall Wall Space, University of La Verne from February 17 – December 18, 2009.

Alum ED GOMEZ '03 had a solo show called Dissuading Passage at Open Gallery Los Angeles from March 28- April 25, 2009.

Graduate fine Arts Chair ROY DOWELL will show his work in “Pictures of Words”, curated by David Pagel at Galerie Schmidt Maczollen In Cologne, Germany in April and May 2009.

Graduate Professor and Assistant Chair ANNETTA KAPON will show her work in a one-person exhibition called "Laundry" at the Numismatic Museum of Athens in Greece from May 19 to June 21, 2009.

Graduate Fine Arts held their MFA OPEN STUDIOS on Sunday April 5, 2009, 2-5 pm.

The Hole-in-the-Wall Gallery in the Graduate Fine Arts Studios guest-curated by Alum Alex Kroll '08 featured the work of grad ANA RODRIGUEZ  for March and April 2009.

Alum ADAM MARS '07 will be showing his installation, Deep Fried Tabloids, at Trashpretty in Laguna Beach from April 2 - May 2, 2009.

Alum SUSAN HOROWITZ '01 curated the exhibition M U S I C  M A P  -  THE FIFTH AT HILL by LARRY ZEMPEL /cartifact.com  for Phantom Galleries LA at Title/Guarantee Art Space on Hill St @ 411 W. 5th St. The exhibition ran from March 23 to April 24, 2009.

Alum JACOB MELCHI '03 was in a one-day group show on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 3616 West Washington Blvd. The show was open by appointment for one week.

Grads BRIAN MARRIER, and ANTHONY CARFELLO, alum BREE YENALAVITCH '06 and visiting Otis/Sandberg exchange residency fellow RENEE VAN TRIER took part in INAUGURAL EXHIBITION curated by alum SOJUNG KWON '08 in room G3 of Angels Gate Cultural Center from April 11 to April 30, 2009.  The exhibition was reviewed in the District Weekly on April 15, 2009. thedistrictweekly.com
