  • Viet Thanh Nguyen’s bestselling novel The Sympathizer won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the First Novel Prize from the Center for Fiction, and a Carnegie Medal from the American Library Association. It was also a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction. Nguyen is also the author of Race and Resistance: Literature and Politics in Asian America and Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War.

    Poet Tonya Foster is the author of the collection A Swarm of Bees in High Court. Her work has appeared in nocturnes, Callaloo, Traffic, Gulf Coast, and other journals. Her essays have appeared in NY Arts Magazine, NYFA Quarterly and The Poetry Project Newsletter. A co-editor of Third Mind: Teaching Creative Writing Through Visual Art, Foster teaches at California College of the Arts and lives in the Bay Area.

    New York-based artist Polly Apfelbaum’s work has situated itself as a hybrid of painting, sculpture, and installation over a career spanning 30 plus years. Exploring the intricacies of color, Apfelbaum weaves her way, both literally and conceptually, through ideas of Minimalism, Pop aesthetics, and Color Field painting to blur the lines between two and three dimensional art making.

    John Keene is the author of the novels Annotations and Counternarratives, as well as several other works, including the poetry collection Seismosis, with artist Christopher Stackhouse, and a translation of Brazilian author Hilda Hilst's novel Letters from a Seducer. The recipient of a Whiting Award, Keene has been a member of the Dark Room Writers Collective and a Cave Canem fellow. He has served as the managing editor of Callaloo and taught at Northwestern. He currently teaches at Rutgers University-Newark and lives in New York.

    Renee Gladman is the author of eight books of prose and poetry, including the Ravicka triology, published by Dorothy (Event Factory, The Ravickians, and Ana Patova Crosses a Bridge). Other titles include Arlem, Not Right Now, Juice The Activist, A Picture Feeling, and Newcomer Can't Swim. Since 2004, she has been the publisher of Leon Works, a perfect bound series of books of experimental prose, and also has edited the Leroy chapbook series.

Alum ALEX DONIS '94 was a featured artist representing US/Guatemala in the 10th Havana Biennale in Cuba from 27 March - 30 April 2009, and concurrently participated in the exhibition/project "Gender (trans)gender and the (de)generates" at the Centro Cultural Bertolt Brecht Sunday March 29. On Thursday April 2 he was on on the panel: "Masculinities in conflict" moderated by Dr. Julio César González Pagés (Cuba) and also featuring artist Argelia Bravo (Venezuela).

Alum WENDY GIVEN '02 showed her photographs in a two person exhibition entitled "Short Stories" at the Fifth Floor Gallery in Los Angeles from March 21 to April 18, 2009.

Alums WHITNEY STOLICH '02, VERONICA SOTO '05, CHRIS OATEY '06, KRISTIN DUCHARME '03, JENNIFER LANSKI '06 and KATHRIN BURMESTER '08 will show their work in an 8 person show entitled "The Edges of the West" curated by graduate Professor and Assistant Chair ANNETTA KAPON at Artower Gallery in Athens, Greece from May 20 to June 24, 2009.

A solo exhibition by alum MATT MACFARLAND '03 will be at HAUS in Pasadena from March 26 thru April 18, 2009.

Alum CHRIS ROWLAND '00 showed his work in a group eaxhibition at Fine Arts & Graphics Gallery from March 7 - April 25, 2009.

Alums MICHELLE ANDRADE, LORENZO HURTADO SEGOVIA, ADAM MARS, TUCKER NEEL, and JOHN WESTON, all '07, also known as the Station collective opened an installation in Long Beach with Phantom Galleries in January, and for May/June they will be doing another installation-event, in downtown LA at Raw Materials called Station Must Go, on May 9, 2009

Alum CHRIS OATEY is showing his large installation "Fountain" at the Tall Wall Space, University of La Verne from February 17 – December 18, 2009.

Alum ED GOMEZ '03 had a solo show called Dissuading Passage at Open Gallery Los Angeles from March 28- April 25, 2009.

Graduate fine Arts Chair ROY DOWELL will show his work in “Pictures of Words”, curated by David Pagel at Galerie Schmidt Maczollen In Cologne, Germany in April and May 2009.

Graduate Professor and Assistant Chair ANNETTA KAPON will show her work in a one-person exhibition called "Laundry" at the Numismatic Museum of Athens in Greece from May 19 to June 21, 2009.

Graduate Fine Arts held their MFA OPEN STUDIOS on Sunday April 5, 2009, 2-5 pm.

The Hole-in-the-Wall Gallery in the Graduate Fine Arts Studios guest-curated by Alum Alex Kroll '08 featured the work of grad ANA RODRIGUEZ  for March and April 2009.

Alum ADAM MARS '07 will be showing his installation, Deep Fried Tabloids, at Trashpretty in Laguna Beach from April 2 - May 2, 2009.

Alum SUSAN HOROWITZ '01 curated the exhibition M U S I C  M A P  -  THE FIFTH AT HILL by LARRY ZEMPEL /cartifact.com  for Phantom Galleries LA at Title/Guarantee Art Space on Hill St @ 411 W. 5th St. The exhibition ran from March 23 to April 24, 2009.

Alum JACOB MELCHI '03 was in a one-day group show on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 3616 West Washington Blvd. The show was open by appointment for one week.

Grads BRIAN MARRIER, and ANTHONY CARFELLO, alum BREE YENALAVITCH '06 and visiting Otis/Sandberg exchange residency fellow RENEE VAN TRIER took part in INAUGURAL EXHIBITION curated by alum SOJUNG KWON '08 in room G3 of Angels Gate Cultural Center from April 11 to April 30, 2009.  The exhibition was reviewed in the District Weekly on April 15, 2009. thedistrictweekly.com
