She paints her subjects with severe, exaggerated features and emaciated limbs that sometimes morph into abstraction, recalling the works of Pablo Picasso. “Some people ask if I hate the models I paint,” she says. “I say no, I don't hate them.

Alum WENDY GIVEN '02 showed a new video, Harnessing Nature, in the Otis Alumni screening  on October 2 at the Center For Democracy in Little Tokyo downtown Los Angeles, CA.

Alum TAMI DEMAREE '03 was in a three person show, Sterling Rainbow, at Conduit Gallery in Dallas, Texas, from September 6 to October 11, 2008

Graduate faculty KORI NEWKIRK'S survey exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (through Sept 14) was reviewed by Christopher Knight in the LA Times on September 5, 2008 and by Mindy Farabee also in the LA Times on July 17, 2008

MFA alums ANDREW ARMSTRONG '02, STEVEN BANKHEAD '01, JESSE BENSON '03, ANNIE BUCKLEY '03, CARLA DANES '01, ED GOMEZ '03, LUIS HERNANDEZ 03, MATT MCFARLAND '03 and MIKE ROGERS '96 showed their work in IN THE ROUND, at Andrew Shire Gallery from October 3 to October 25, 2008. The show was organized by alum ED GOMEZ '03, in cooperation with Director of Otis Alumni Relations, Sarah Russin, for the citywide series of exhibitions OTIS ACROSS LA. 

Graduate Fine Arts Chair ROY DOWELL and graduate faculty KORI NEWKIRK are included in 20 Years Ago Today, an exhibition that celebrates the 20th anniversary of the California Community Foundation’s Fellowships for Visual Artists at the Japanese American National Museum from October 4, 2008 to January 11, 2009.

Alum ED GOMEZ '03 is part of The Whole World is Watching at The Glendale College Art Gallery from September 20th until November 8, 2008. Irene Tsatsos was the guest curator.

Graduate faculty ANNETTA KAPON participated in the exhibition IN TRANSITION RUSSIA 2008 organized by NeMe and the Independent Museum of Contemporary Art (IMCA), Cyprus, in collaboration with the National Centres of Contemporary Art (NCCA), Ekaterinburg and Moscow, in the Russian Federation. The exhibition runs from October 16 to December 22, 2008. KAPON also presented her work in the International Conference: " In Transition: Cultural Identity in an age of Transnational and Transcultural Flux" organized by NeMe, the Ural State University and the Academy of Contemporary Art, Ekaterinburg. 

As a member of a four-person MAK Center team, alum NIZAN SHAKED '00,  received an exhibition award of $150,000 from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation to mount "How Many Billboards on the Boulevard?," an outdoor exhibition of conceptual art. The exhibitions are scheduled to open between 2009 and 2011.

Grads AMANDA KELLER-KONYA and TASHA MOORE were selected for a two-week trip to France to take photographs from October 15 to October 28, 2008. The trips were sponsored by Maison de la France-the French Government Tourist Office and French Cultural Services in Los Angeles.

The work of WHITNEY STOLICH '03 is showcased in the Skadden/Arps LA 25 exhibition, which was held on September 27 at the Hammer Museum. The LA 25 artists are also in the exhibition "Half Life" at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) from October 8 to November 16, 2008.

On Saturday, September 27, 2008, alum TONE NIELSEN '98 participated in the panel "whatever happened to the alter-globalization movement?learning from the recent past, planning for the future" as part of the exhibition "asking we walk, voices of resistance" from September 27 to October 19, 2008 at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning, Oslo, and Copenhagen, Denmark.The exhibition is curated by Kuratorisk Aktion (Berlin & Copenhagen) and Katarina Stenbeck (Copenhagen)www.denfrie.dk.

Alums WENDY GIVEN ’02 SOJUNG KWON ’07, BREE YENALAVITCH ’06, and graduate faculty ANNETTA KAPON and KATHRIN BURMESTER took part in Multiple Feeds, curated by Erika Suderburg on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at the Democracy Forum at the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, JANM.

Alum ANDREW ARMSTRONG '00 took part in "Just How Does a Patriot Act" a group exhibition curated by Joella March at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art from October 2 to October 25 2008.

Alum ANNIE BUCKLEY '03, has a solo exhibition “Hybrids”, from October 11 to November 8 at Carl Berg Gallery. Also, a new short story of hers will be published in a book included in Steven Hull’s new project Luna Luna Arena 1 Gallery in Santa Monica from October 18th – November 22nd.www.santamonicaartstudios.com...

Alum WENDY GIVEN '02 showed her work NO MAN’S LAND in a two person show at Solomon Projects in Atlanta GA, from October 17- December 6, 2008. In addition, GIVEN'S photographic series of Peanut Elves is featured in the latest issue of ITCH Magazine and in the homepage of the BEAUTIFUL/DECAY website.www.beautifuldecay.com

Alum BILL KLEIMAN '89(curated by Lisa Melandri) is in the show SURFACE SOUNDING -TEN CURATORS TEN ARTISTS curated by Janet Levy of Seeline Gallery from October 10 to November 22, 2008.

Grad AMANDA KELLER-KONYA participated in the downtown art walk Thursday, October 9 with a show at the Spring Arts Collective Gallery.

Graduate Fine Arts chair ROY DOWELL is in a group exhibition at the Aspen Museum of Art from Oct 30 to Dec 21.m MATT MACFARLAND'S '03 "The Lost Artworks (insufficient edition)" was in a one-person online exhibition at Light & Wire Gallery from November 1 - November 30, 2008. lightandwiregallery.com

Graduate faculty RENEE PETROPOULOS and alum TUCKER NEEL '07 participated in Conventions and Attitudes, curated by Karen Atkinson, that was part of Exchange Rate 2008, an international performance exchange taking place on the evening of Nov. 4 (Election Day) at Remy's on Temple. The show traveled to New York with the HABEAS LOUNGE project that was be featured in the CUNY Graduate Center Art Gallery in the days preceding and following the election. 

Alums MICHELLE WIENER '08 and MELISSA HERRINGTON '08 were both selected as a team by the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam to represent Otis in the second Otis-Sandberg residency exchange fellowship in March and April 2009.

Alums ROB FAUCETTE '05 and ULYSSES JENKINS '79 were in a group exhibition during the Inglewood Open Studios on November 8th 2008.

Alum BREE YENALAVITCH '06 participated in the video festival Time is Love curated by Kisito Assangni at Galerie Ocrobre in Paris on November 8, 2008.

Alum CHRIS OATEY'S '06 work was featured in "Transporting a Visual Texture" in NY Arts Magazine in November/December 2008. OATEY also received an Artist's Resource for Completion grant from the Durfee Foundation in the 3rd quarter of 2008.

Alums TERRA KURODA 06, HELEN CAHNG '05, MICHELE CHONG '06, TOM NORRIS '02 and COURTNEY STRICKLIN '06 each had Solo Shows at Sea and Space Explorations from November 29th - December 7th, 2008.

Alum CHRIS ROWLAND '00 showed his work in First Friday, at Paulina Miller Gallery in Phoenix AZ, from November 7 to December 28, 2008.

Delusionarium 4 is an exhibition of 24 artists spread throughout three Los Angeles galleries. It is the 4th installation of a series of nomadic group exhibitions organized by alum JESSE BENSON '03. Alums MOLLY COREY '01 and STEPHEN BANKHEAD '01, participated in Zero Coupon at Circus Gallery from December 13 to January 17, 2009.

Alum SOJUNG KWON '07 did performance in "One Day Arty Show" on Saturday, December 13th, 2008 at Gallery Summer Fish in Seoul, Korea.
