This exhibition, two-volume publication, website, and series of public programs, documents, contextualizes and pays tribute to the groundbreaking work of feminist artists and art collectives that were centered at the Los Angeles Woman's Building in the 1970s and 1980s. It highlights collaborative production and features work by Ariadne: A Social Network, Chrysalis, Feminist Art Workers, The Incest Awareness Project, LA Women’s Video Center, Lesbian Art Project, Gay and Lesbian Art Show (GALAS), Madre Tierra, Mother Art, Natalie Barney Collective, Sisters of Survival, The Waitresses, Women’s Graphic Center, Writers Workshop, and so many more.
Doin' It In Public is part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980, an unprecedented collaboration that brings together more than sixty cultural institutions from across Southern California for six months to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty. The presenting sponsor is Bank of America. Additional funding for Doin it in Public has been provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Henry Luce Foundation, Barbara Lee Family Foundation, and the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angeles.
