L'Apocalypse Figuree

L'Apocalypse Figurée by Jean Duvet

Location: Special Collections

Duvet Apocalypse title page

Title page of facsimile, with engraving of Satan bound for a Thousand Years

In the 16th century, as printing spread, illustrated books proliferated. Among significant examples is this llustrated Apocalypse from 1561, with engravings by Jean Duvet.

Duvet is best known as one of the great printmakers of the French Renaissance.

Duvet's Apocalypse contains 24 engravings. The first plate is a self-portrait. In subject matter he borrows from Albrecht Dürer's wood engravings, yet his style is highly individual.

Ours is a facsimile edition printed by Eugrammia Press in 1962.
