Otis is committed to supporting faculty in their pursuit of excellence in teaching effectiveness, professional activities, and collegiality.
Faculty Development activities are organized throughout the college in various venues ranging from Academic Assembly to Academic Departments to the Teaching / Learning / Center (TLC) to the Provost's Office. The Faculty Development Committee acts as a central advisory and/or coordinating body for these activities (2010-11 Committee Co-Chairs: Ysamur Flores-Peña and Jason Burton).
Small grants are available to support projects and activities including, but not limited to, teaching effectiveness related to diverse student learning styles, dealing with student struggles, and educating the whole student; professional activities such as research, funding for supplies and materials, or participation in conferences and workshops; and college activities such as building departmental teamwork, forging trans-disciplinary avenues of investigation, and fostering communication across traditional boundaries.
One-on-one consultations with on-campus support staff are also available; faculty can discuss an upcoming project in more depth, review best practices, or brainstorm about particular student needs by meeting with an experienced department administrator, knowledgeable staff person, and/or teaching colleague, as needed.
