Our annual Faculty Convocation will convene the morning of Thursday, August 26th. This special event is designed to welcome all returning and new faculty to campus, to provide updates on major developments at Otis over the summer, and to offer a compelling presentation program to start the academic year.
Our Convocation theme will be "Teaching to Sustainable Practices in Art and Design." Keynote Speaker, Nathan Shedroff, is the author of numerous books on sustainable art/design practices and their place in education, including Design is the Problem: The Future of Design must be Sustainable, and he is Chair of the graduate program in Design Strategy at California College of the Arts.
Independent curator Patricia Watts will share with us some unusual and influential artists working in an environmentally-conscious way, and some interesting tie-ins between our theme and her work with Gallery Director Meg Linton on the upcoming Make-Craft exhibition in Ben Maltz Gallery.
And Rosemary Brantley, Chair of Fashion Design, will share how Otis’ Fashion Design program has embedded the teaching of sustainable practices in its curriculum, and discuss the value of sustainable design in the professional design world that Fashion graduates enter.
The Convocation will conclude with our inaugural Teaching Excellence Awards celebration, honoring three of Otis’ finest faculty members. Finally, lunch will be served to all participants from 12:15 to 1:15pm in the Galef Lobby and surrounding outdoor areas.
