Career Resources

Career Services has developed the following resources below to aid in your professional development.

Resume Resources (PDF)
The purpose of a resume is to list all of your achievements and help you in getting an interview. You may need to tailor your resume to your major (Toy Design resumes are typically much more graphically oriented than resumes from Architecture/Landscape/Interiors, for example).

Cover Letter Resources(PDF)
A cover letter is designed to do three things: introduce yourself, express what’s not evident in your resume, and talk about why you’d be a good “fit” at the company. Cover letters are tailored to suit a job description for a specific company. Slight modifications based on your personal taste and/or field of study are still acceptable.

Career Services Manual (PDF)
Covers a wide range of topics including resume writing, cover letter writing, interview tips, and how to create a great portfolio!

Functional Resume Worksheet (PDF)
A functional resume differs from a chronological resume (the kind most people use) in that it highlights your skills rather than your work history. Typically this type of format is used by individuals who are changing careers or have gaps in their work history.

Thank You Letter Resources(PDF)
Thank You letters are designed to thank someone for giving you their time. Typically they are sent after an interview but could also be sent after a chance encounter with an industry pro or after the person provides you with a career connection or opportunity. Following an interview, they are a good way to remind the recipient about you, your qualifications, reiterate your enthusiasm and commitment to the position, and show that you pay attention to details.

Informational Interview (PDF)
The purpose of an informational interview is to gather information from a professional in your desired career and/or industry of interest. The informational interview serves as a way to network with a professional in your field of interest by meeting with them for 15-30 minutes in person. During the interview, you will ask the professional a series of prepared questions in order to gain a better understanding of the duties of their position.

Action Words (PDF)
Add action words to your resumes and cover letters to describe work experience. Use these action words to write a compelling resume.
