Fragments of Terror by Faculty member Jim Starrett
01/20/12
For the last 32 years, faculty member Jim Starrett has been producing drawings related to the Holocaust. The work is featured in Fragments of Terror, a solo exhibition at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University, through June 8. As Jim states “Throughout the thirty-two years I have committed to creating this work I have often felt that I am working in very dangerous but necessary waters.” Jim's personal history as an artist, Catholic, and pacifist informs these meditative explorations of the meaning of icons in contemporary art, or as Patrick E. White stated in htis catalogue essay "the full force of these sublime and terrible images to our symbolic and moral vocabulary." In their starkness and simplicity, the swastikas, prison cells, and single empty chairs carry powerful messages.
