Venice Bienniale features work by alumni entrepreneurs
09/06/12
This year's U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (Architecture) features 124 projects that address the theme of design action for the common good. The "Seed Bomb" project by alumni Danny Phillips ('08) and Kim Karlsrud ('07) of Greenaid is one of the urban interventions selected from 450 entries. Guerilla gardeners across L.A. and in Europe, Greece, Canada and Mexico, residents find repurposed gum ball machines that dispense seed bombs (a mixture of clay, compost, and seeds), for 25 cents, and toss them into derelict urban spaces such as vacant lots and median strips. Phillips and Karlsrud represent a new breed of creative entrepreneurs who use a DIY ethic to change the world.
