Los Angeles, CA — June 14, 2013 — An original clothing collection designed by fashion design students at Otis College of Art and Design and inspired by Disney • Pixar’s new feature film, “Monsters University,” will be on display for the film’s June 17 premiere in Hollywood, Calif., at the El Capitan Theatre and throughout its run at the theatre, June 21–Aug. 2, 2013.
Disney Consumer Products collaborated with Otis College of Art and Design to create an exceptional educational experience resulting in this one of a kind sportswear collection based on three characters from “Monsters University” - Sulley, Mike and Art. Designer and Otis alumna Marisol Gerona (’93) worked with John Fiscella, director of product innovation at Disney Consumer Products, to mentor Otis fashion students as they brought the designs to life.
The design students visited The Disney Studios, where they met with Disney designers and character artists and learned about the personalities and special characteristics of each character. The students were directed to design street wear with sustainability for extended use, both athletic and off court, and to reflect the character in the clothing without using the character’s image. They incorporated recycled materials such as household mops, sponges and repurposed fabrics into their designs. Sketch selections, critiques and a final jury selection culminated in a fantastic runway show at the Otis Annual Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show in Beverly Hills, Calif., with Otis raising more than $1 million in scholarships for young talent.
Disney Consumer Products has joined a handful of top brands in partnership with Otis College of Art and Design to form the Otis Sustainability Alliance – a group of leaders in fashion, design, art, and higher education committed to advancing environmental and economic sustainability through their work and collaboration. Inaugural corporate partners include: Eddie Bauer, Nike, Patagonia, Quiksilver, and Todd Oldham.
ABOUT THE OTIS FASHION DESIGN PROGRAM
The Fashion Design Department at Otis trains students in all aspects of the design process, offering a fully accredited BFA degree. The school year follows the industry schedule and several seasons are designed simultaneously. Working with professional mentors, students learn far more than the skills needed to sew and draw: they experience all facets of the industry, and they learn to meet deadlines with creativity and self-discipline. Otis Fashion alumni enter the design world as assistant designers, associate designers, illustrators, costume designers, textile designers, accessory designers, and product designers. Some open their own clothing line immediately upon graduation.
ABOUT “MONSTERS UNIVERSITY”
Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right. Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”). Rated G by the MPAA, the film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in 3D in select theaters.
