Splendid Entities: 25 Years of Objects by Phyllis Green
January 18 - March 19, 2011
The first large-scale survey to present the innovative sculptures of Los Angeles based artist Phyllis Green, highlighting the important contribution Green has made to art and craft for more than two decades. Throughout her career, Green has used the traditional techniques of craft to achieve unconventional outcomes in the realm of fine art. Cleverly combining such materials as clay, wood and fiber, she produces sculpture that pushes beyond the traditional boundaries of craft and challenges the lingering modernist assumption that decoration and ornament are enemies of high art. Many of her mixed media objects are hybrids of symbolic male and female representation: perforated and projecting, soft and hard, inside and outside. They evoke all manner of "female" allusions by their small size and by the multi-layered use of flocking, feathers and fabric. The use of body imagery as form and content, and the location of the body as a site of desire and identity are consistent features of Green's artistic output between 1985-2010, the period on which the exhibition focuses. www.phyllisgreen.net

Wake Amusements
March 1 – 30, 2011
Wake Amusements is an exhibition organized by Curator Matt Packer from the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork. The exhibition features artist books by 12 contemporary Irish artists, who each use the book format as a space of display, investigation and interaction. Adopting the title of 'wake amusements', and drawing reference to the jovial funerary practices that were an Irish folk tradition up until the turn of the 20th century, the artists books have been selected to reflect the theme of enlivening the dead as applied to people, places, and objects. The exhibition features the following Irish artists: Fergus Feehily, Simon Cutts, Sean Lynch, Alice Maher, David Sherry, Daniel Jewesbury, Stephen Brandes, Ciara Healy, Nevan Lehart, Jaki Irvine, Erica Van Horn, and Garrett Phelan. This project is funded in part by Culture Ireland's initiative Imagine Ireland – A Year of Irish Artists in America 2011.
