The Future Is Idea-Based.
We live in an intensely visualized world where things are in constant flux; artists and designers are the idea makers and drivers.
Otis’ interdisciplinary curriculum combines longtime strengths in fine arts and design with new technologies and emerging disciplines. Undergraduates in Foundation Year, the first year of study, learn fundamental and transferable skills in the visual arts and critical thinking. At the end of the first year, students select a studio major, which allows them to delve deeply into their chosen art and design field, advancing their work and professional preparation through a sequence of courses and experiences. Eligible students in select majors may extend and complement their study by pursuing an academic minor (a defined course sequence that explores a theme, topic, or discipline).
They also participate in Creative Action: Integrated Learning projects, which are team-based partnerships with community organizations. They focus on team building, researching and addressing the needs of their partners as well as implementing real-world solutions when possible. The goal is to extend the traditional boundaries of the classroom, and respond to community challenges using students’ diverse visions.
In addition, travel study programs allow students to enrich their college experience by studying at another U.S. art and design college or at one of our international partner schools.
