Dolly Davis ’03 Architecture/Landscape/Interiors
As Senior Project Designer at Fluidity
, a water feature design firm in L.A., I act as a consultant to many architects and landscape architects around the world. My work allows me to develop my knowledge of architecture while also exposing me to design problems seldom encountered in most offices. It’s challenging and rewarding, but more importantly, it’s fun!
Working at a company with global projects has given me the opportunity to travel. I spent eight months overseeing the construction of a project in Dubai. I never would have expected to find myself in a foreign country as my company’s sole representative. In my downtime I was able to explore the region and even learned to snowboard at the indoor ski slope, a surreal experience. It was a huge period of growth for me, both personally and professionally.
I always knew I wanted to be an artist but when I discovered Otis’ A/L/I program, I saw that architecture was a career that could be both fun and rewarding.
For several years after completing my BFA degree, I worked at Fluidity. I decided to pursue a masters in architecture degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago to advance my career. Graduate study had not been part of my plan but I found that I was well prepared for the program. I returned to L.A. and my job at Fluidity with renewed energy. Keeping a finger on the pulse of academia has helped me stay engaged in and excited about my professional work, which is why I am a teaching assistant at Otis! It all comes full circle. Sharing my perspective with students while they share their ideas with me is stimulating.
