Candida Alvarez A Wing A Halo

Candida Alvarez (b. 1955 in Brooklyn, NY) received her B.F.A. from Fordham University and her M.F.A. from Yale School of Art. 

Alvarez is widely regarded as one of the most highly innovative and experiemental painters of her generation.  She grew up in New York City and moved to Chicago in the late 1990s. Since establishing herself as an artist in the 1980s, Alvarez has expanded on a conceptually rich, intuitive process of building abstract paintings. Alvarez’s breadth of practice incorporates drawings, photography, and printmaking.

Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX; DePaul Art Museum, Chicago, IL; El Museo del Barrio, New York, NY; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; and Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico, among others. Alvarez’s work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Virginia Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art.  She is the 2021 recipient of the Helen Frankenthaler Award for Painting and the 2019 Joan Mitchell Foundation award. Alvarez is the F.H. Sellers Professor in Painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Alvarez currently lives and works in Baroda, MI and Chicago, IL.
