Graduate Fine Arts Lecture: Annekatrin Hendel

Annekatrin Hendel

FASSBINDER Film Screening

Belonging to the last generation of the German Democratic Republic able to tell authentic stories about a country that has disappeared, Annekatrin Hendel is the producer of a number of successful German feature films, such as FLAKE, about the keyboarder of Rammstein, and FASSBINDER, about German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. She was dissatisfied with films about the GDR seen in cinema, with their clichés of uniformity, melancholy, and constant despondence: as she saw it, passion was also a part of life in the GDR, along with youthful euphoria, diversity – albeit not immediately noticeable –, a variety of biographies, and powerful stories of friendship and betrayal. And so she came to film with a program for content that is still valid today.
