BETWEEN ATHENS AND LOS ANGELES
Sofia Dona (b. Athens, 1981) is an architect and artist realizing works in the field between architecture and art, with a focus on public space. She studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens, and received her Masters in Fine Arts from the Bauhaus University of Weimar (in “Public Art and New Artistic Strategies”). She is currently a Ph.D. student at the Department of Architecture of the University of Thessaly, working on and exploring the symbolic twinning of distant cities, such as Leipzig and Detroit, Los Angeles and Athens, and received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2015 to continue her research in the US.
She has been realizing projects in various cities around the world, including Leipzig, Detroit, Chicago and Pisa. As a member of the art collective “Errands”, she has participated in exhibitions such as the 2nd Athens Biennial (2009), the 7th São Paulo Biennial of Architecture (2007), and the 1st Istanbul Design Biennial (2012). In 2014, she co-curated the project “Enjoy Your State of Emergency: Art and Activist Strategies in Times of Crisis" at NGBK-Berlin, and the project “New Babylon Revisited” in Athens. In 2012, she curated the project “Austausch/Exchange” at the Broadway Passage and Cinema-Theatre in Athens, and in June 2013 curated and organised the project “On Board - Charter 2013” that travelled between Marseille and Athens, both under the auspices of the Goethe-Institut Athens.
