Julie Tolentino

The MFA Fine Arts program at Otis College of Art and Design is pleased to have Julie Tolentino join its Visiting Artist Lecture Series for Spring 2023. Join us via Zoom for this special artist presentation, followed by Q&A on Thursday, April 6th, 11:00 a.m. via Zoom. 

Julie Tolentino (b. 1964, San Francisco) lives and works in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree and received an MFA from University of California Riverside in 2020. Tolentino led queer club spaces such as Clit Club, Tattooed Love Child, and Dagger and was a founding member of HOUSE OF COLOR Video Collective, Art Positive and part of ACT UP New York. Solo exhibitions and performances include (selected): 2022 Whitney Biennial (with Ivy Kwan Arce, Stosh Fila, Jih-Fei Cheng); Museum of Contemporary Art-Macedonia (2022); Aspen Art Museum (2020); Performance Space New York, (2019); Commonwealth and Council (2019); Participant Inc, New York (2019, 2005); The Kitchen, New York (2019, 2001); EFA Project Space, New York (2019); 6th Annual Thessaloniki Biennale (2018); The Lab, San Francisco (2018); New Museum, NY, NY (2013); Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, SF, CA (2015); Performa, NY, NY (2013, 2008); and Participant, Inc, NY, NY (2005).

Selected awards and residencies include Mike Kelly Foundation with homeLA (2022), Anonymous Was a Woman Award (2021), Herb Alpert/Ucross Residency (2021), MacDowell Residency (2020), Queer|Art|Prize for Sustained Achievement (2020), the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant To Artists award in Performance (2019), Fulcrum Arts Artist Honor (2019), Pieter Performance Dancemakers Grant (2018), Boffo Fire Island Residency (2018), Hope Mohr Dance Community Engagement Artist-In-Residence (2017-18), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Community Artist (2013-14), PACT Zollverein Residency, Essen (2012), Art Matters Foundation Award (2015, 2010), CHIME Mentorship awards with Doran George (2010) and with Jmy James Kidd (2012), Art Matters (2010). 

In 2022, Tolentino was a Visiting Critic at University of Pennsylvania, the Alma Hawkins Visiting Chair of World Arts and Cultures at University of California, Los Angeles and a 2021-2022 NYU Dean’s Scholar in Residence in the Art School. She currently is a 2022-2023 SAIC MFA Program Mentor,  a 2021-2023 Queer Art Mentor, and is a permanent faculty at California Institute of the Arts in the School of Art.
