Overview

Jonathan Louis contracted Design Lab to provide upholstery furniture product sketches, a marketing plan, and an installation/display concept for the JL x Otis Collection, which debuted at the April 2021 High Point Market, “the must-see event in home furnishings.” The Design Lab team was tasked by Jonathan Louis to create designs inspired by “the future.”

Concept

Jonathan Louis - sample 1Design Lab created a modular furniture set called  “The Hive.” The Hive collection was inspired by arrays of tessellations found in nature, specifically the shape and design found within a beehive. The modular set is functional, adaptable, and customizable. The collection consists of modular hexagoal sectional pieces that allow consumers to purchase individual units and expand the collection at their discretion.

The Design Lab team drew inspiration for the concept of “the future” from altered home and work spaces as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The modular set allows customers to adjust their living and work spaces accordingly.

Once The Hive concept was approved, the Design Lab team began revising the design to be prototyped. For C.J. Sierra, a Product Design senior, seeing pieces go from sketch to reality was a highlight of the semester. “When they showed us an actual prototype of what we had designed, it took all our breaths away. Our whole team was so thrilled to see our work come to life,” Sierra says. “As students, we know what is supposed to await us when we start working in the industry, but to get a glimpse of that while working at Design Lab has been a blessing.”

Installation

After the prototype was finished, Design Lab drafted designs for the exhibition space at High Point Market. The team explored and researched various solutions for lighting, textiles, and overall installation design materials. After a design was approved, the Jonathan Louis team shared dimensions of the exhibition area for Design Lab to determine accurate measurements for the additional components within the space.
