Joep van Lieshout
2013-2014 Donghia Designer in Residence, Architecture/Landscape/Interiors

Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout lives and works in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and is the driving force behind ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT. Joep began as a solo artist, creating objects in brightly colored polyester- the material that became his trademark beginning in the early 1980s. In 1995 he founded Atelier Van Lieshout to produce objects that balance art, architecture and design; encompassing sculpture and installations, buildings and furniture, utopias and dystopias.
Elizabeth Diller
2014 George H. Scanlon Lecturer, Architecture/Landscape/Interiors

ELIZABETH DILLER is a founding principal of DILLER SCOFIDIO + RENFRO (DS+R), New York, an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. DS+R’s architectural projects include: the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts expansion and redesign; the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston; the High Line in N.Y.; Blur in Switzerland; the Broad Museum in L.A.; the Museum of Image and Sound in Rio; the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive; and Culture Shed, N.Y.
DS+R are recipients of the MacArthur Foundation ‘genius’ award, the National Design Award from the Smithsonian, the Brunner Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Centennial Medal of Honor from the American Academy in Rome, and numerous AIA awards. Ms. Diller was recently selected as an Aspen Institute Harman-Eisner Artist in Residence, and awarded the Barnard Medal of Distinction. In 2003, the Whitney Museum held a retrospective of DS+R’s unorthodox practice. Ms. Diller is a Professor of Architecture at Princeton University.
Roberta Smith
2013 Visiting Critic, FIne Arts

Born in New York City, and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, Smith earned a B.A. from Grinnell College in 1969. An alumna of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, she worked at the Museum of Modern Art and the Paula Cooper Gallery before becoming a professional art critic in the 1970s, contributing to Artforum and serving as a senior editor for Art in America. In 1981, she became Art Critic for the Village Voice before moving to the New York Times in 1986. In 2003, the College Art Association honored Smith with the prestigious Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism. On Nov. 5 at 7:30, she will present a public lecture, “ART CRITICISM IN THE EXPANDED FIELD," and discuss the ways criticism has changed: the effects of the Internet, blogging and tweeting on writing “print” criticism for a daily newspaper, as well as the expansion of the art world itself and the kinds of art being made, Moss Theater at New Roads School, 3131 Olympic Blvd Santa Monica, CA 90404
Diedrich Deiderichsen

Diedrich Diederichsen (b. 1957, Hamburg) is a German author, journalist, cultural critic, and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. His writing has appearedin a variety of periodicals and publications including Texte zur Kunst, Die Zeit, die tageszeitung, Der Tagesspiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Theater heute, Artscribe, Artforum, and Frieze. He presented a public lecture at LACMA entitled “Our Kind of Venue - Subcultures, Instutions, and Historiography.”
Shashi Caan
2013 Donghia Designer in Residence, Architecture/Landscape/Interiors

Shashi Caan taught a master class to Architecture/Landscape/Interiors students, and presented a public lecture at MOCA. Born in India, educated in Scotland and N.Y., Caan promotes green materials and products, including the environmentally friendly architectural finishing product for an Italian company. She is founding principal of The Collective US/UK and the President of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers.
Jeff Guess
2012 Visiting Artist, Graduate Fine Arts

Paris-based artist Jeff Guess was guest artist in Graduate Fine Arts in November. His residency was partly supported by Ceci n’est pas… a project initiated by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. in association with the Institut Français, with the support of the Alliance Française of L.A.
Brad Pruitt
2013 Visiting Filmmaker, Graduate Public Practice

The Emmy Award-winning, Milwaukee-based filmmaker Brad Pruitt was artist-in-residence in Graduate Public Practice from January-April 2013. Pruitt's documentaries explore issues such as gun violence and new approaches to public education, finding new voices and ideas to help develop solutions for seemingly intractable challenges. He will co-teach a course on education, community engagement and the value of social change work by artists. in collaboration with Watts House Project and MKE<->LAX, he presented two free public screenings in Culver City and Watts. Otis faculty member and director of MKE<->LAX, Sara Daleiden, led discussions following the screenings.
A.L. Steiner
2012 Visiting Artist and Curator, Fine Arts

A.L. Steiner, who has been described as “a skeptical queer ecofeminist androgyne hustling as a cultural worker in a late- capitalistic economy,” creates politically charged, provocative photographs, videos, and collages. Often drawing on feminist and queer themes, she is perhaps best known for her 69-minute “sociosexual” film, Community Action Center, made in collaboration with artist A.K. Burns. In addition to her individual art practice, Steiner is involved with several collaborative activities, including the band Chicks on Speed, the curatorial partnership Ridykeulous (with painter Nicole Eisenman), and the organization WAGE (Working Artists in the Greater Economy), which she co-founded. Her work has been exhibited at venues including the Tate Modern, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Sofia, the New Museum, MoMA PS1, and the Centre Pompidou.
Joshua Clover
2012 Visiting Poet and Critic, Fine Arts

Joshua Clover is a poet, critic, journalist and author. He has appeared in three editions of Best American Poetry, is a two-time winner of the Pushcart Prize, and recipient of an individual grant from the NEA; his first book of poetry, Madonna anno domini, received the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets. A graduate of Boston University and the Iowa Writer's Workshop, Clover is a Professor of English Literature and Critical Theory at the University of California, Davis, and was the distinguished Holloway poet-in- residence at the University of California, Berkeley in 2002-2003.
David Ratcliff

David Ratcliff uses appropriated digital imagery in his large-scale paintings. He received his BA from Pratt Institute. He has had solo exhibitions in N.Y., Brussels, Tokyo, Kyoto, L.A., and London, and his work is included in the Jumex Collection, LACMA, and Saatchi Collection. He lives and works in L.A.
Delia Brown
2012 Visiting Artist, Fine Arts

Delia Brown is an L.A.-based artist whose work explores desire as an individuated experience that connects the personal to the collective unconscious, often mediated through advertising and commercial culture. Referencing early bourgeois painting genres, she paints herself and friends enacting their own fantasies of being part of the leisure class, with props from snacks and beverages to million-dollar artworks. She received her BA from UC Santa Cruz and her MFA from UCLA. She has had solo exhibitions in N.Y., L.A., Seoul, Venice, Paris and Athens. Her work is in the collections of the Seattle Art Museum and the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive.
Erik Frydenborg

Erik Frydenborg merges elements of collage, sculpture, and display architecture to construct his installations. He received his BA from Maryland Institute College of Art and his MFA from UCLA. He has had solo exhibitions in L.A., Chicago and Baltimore.He lives and works in L.A.
Liz Glynn
2012 Visiting Artist, Fine Arts

Liz Glynn employs objects and actions to consider the ambition of empire, the pleasure of ruin, and the possibility of a new way forward. Her practice seeks to embody dynamic cycles of growth and decay by creating works which evidence process, encourage participation, and incite future action. Her work has been exhibited across the U.S. at venues including at LACMA, MOCA/Los Angeles, Armand Hammer Museum, LACE, Machine Project, Acuna-Hansen Gallery, REDCAT Lounge, Paula Cooper Gallery, John Connolly Presents, and the New Museum in N.Y. She has been a resident artist at O'Artoteca in Milan, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Vermont Studio Center. Glynn received her MFA from California Institute of the Arts, and her BA from Harvard College. She is the recipient of a Fellowship for Visual Artists from The California Community Foundation.
Erlea Maneros Zabala
2012 Visiting Artist, Fine Arts

Erlea Maneros Zabala is a mixed media artist who creates wall paintings, drawings and image-based work in which the material processes intersect with museological and news media sources. She has exhibited extensively internationally, including at Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain; Kadist Art Foundation, Paris; Carreras Múgica, Bilbao, Basque Country; Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles; and Seamen's Art Club, Hamburg, Germany. She wil have a solo show at the Guggenheim Bilbao in 2013; and is in the collections of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, and the Glasgow School of Art. Zabala received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts and lives in LA.
