History of Costume (Online)

To fully appreciate the role and purpose of clothing, it is vital to understand “costume” in an academic sense: the style of dress particular to a nation, period, or class. In this online course, students explore the history of costume from antiquity to the beginning of the twentieth century. Classes survey clothing styles and personal adornment as well as the aesthetic, functional, sociological, economic, and cultural factors that influence them. Students must have access to a movie-streaming service to complete assignments.

Prerequisite: None

Textbook required:  Costume and Fashion, A Concise History; 4th Edition (or other edition), Laver, James.  Thames and Hudson, Inc., NY, N.Y., 2002.
