Introduction to Letterpress

Long live Letterpress! Relief printing with letterforms, both metal and wood, impart a tactile quality to printed matter not found in any other printing method. Students are introduced to the basics of letterpress printing, including hand typesetting, typography, composition, and distribution by working on a collaborative project. Students will complete an additional project of individual design. Otis Laboratory Press is a fully functioning letterpress studio with four Vandercook proof presses and over 200 typefaces.

Prerequisite: None

Included in Course Price: $35 for courses held in a college lab, $30 (materials provided by instructor)

Optional Open Lab: $150 payable at checkout. An average of six hours per week, with a maximum of 60 hours total for the 10-week term. Lab hours will be posted, and schedules will be determined between the lab manager and the student.
