Encaustic Painting

Rethink what you know about paint by exploring this ancient form of art using melted, pigmented wax. Pablo Picasso and Jasper Johns are just a few of notable artists that have created encaustic works of art. In this course, students learn and refine fundamental painting skills (color mixing, composition, value, layering) and techniques specific to encaustic painting (incising, layering and scraping). Students will gain new methods for mixing encaustic paint with various media (oil, ink, charcoal, collage, photographs), and develop their own unique subject matter and imagery to create visually expressive work. Both painterly and sculptural approaches may also be explored.

Course Materials:  Will be discussed with instructor during the first class meeting.
