In October, students from twelve classes and six departments worked together on the Otis Community Banquet. The large lunch was inspired by artist duo Lucy + Jorge Orta's 70 x 7 The Meal - a series of large-scale community meals focused on issues of local and sustainable food, health, and community cooperation. Lucy + Jorge Orta attended as guests of honor as part of their week-long residency at Otis from October 20 to 25.
In addition to the selection of soups, salads, and fruit-infused water, students made everything from the hand-carved wooden chopsticks to the printed tablecloths. When guests arrived, they received napkins printed with their seat number and their neighbor’s with the following instructions: “Welcome them to the banquet. Sit with them.”
The Otis Community Banquet, connected to the curriculum for the participating classes, was a live praxis of the concepts they've been working with in relation to the exhibition Food-Water-Life by Lucy + Jorge Orta at the Ben Maltz Gallery. While the seats at the tables were reserved for the students in the project, the greater Otis Community joined the Banquet to view the projects and sample the food and beverages.
