Slide 1 of 10

Through the languages of drawing, painting, and collage, Alexandria Wallace is working as a translator. Her line, linking a series of 12 works on paper like an ellipsis, is a dark sumi ink stroke that is seemingly one with the surface of its paper support. Responding to the architecture of the room, one large painting titled Joist serves as a point of rest after the lengthy installation of Pace, a work that wraps around nearly 60 feet of the gallery. Wallace compresses her source material, including images documenting Los Angeles, into a singular plane using methods stolen from both digital and analogue processes. The pieces both reflect and deflect each other, as they are connected but also jockeying for their own meaning through difference. Geometric interventions, in the form of large opaque painted shapes, come towards you in each composition- allowing the surface to separate. This physical volume, constructed with Wallace’s concoction of forms, becomes the atmospheric mantra of the collective exhibition, titled Plain Sight / Plane Site.

Gallery Maquette, 1 ft to 1 inch scale model of the Bolsky Gallery. This is a to scale model of the potential installation of the Thesis Exhibition: Plain Sight / Plane Site. The model shows three images. Upper right: A view from the space where the two Untitled paintings (40x30 IN and 4x4 FT) are installed. Lower left: an arial view of the entire gallery space. Lower right: a close up view of PACE, showing the wobbly painted shape that the 12 works on paper would be installed inside. The shape runs both vertically and horizontally, with the drawings specifically spaced inside to dictate the viewers speed and proximity to the work.
