Through portraiture, landscapes and still lifes, Maria Laura Hendrix links the themes of labor value and privilege to narrate her history through a visual form. In her exhibition titled Hasta La Raiz /To the Roots, eighteen paintings including works on paper and on canvas are paired in various groupings. They are displayed in a non-hierarchical format to allow the viewing to start at any one point. This allows for conversation to occur between the different images as Hendrix explores the ideas of the painters’ hands vs. laborer’s hands and the perceived value of each. By looking at the citrus industry as the starting point, Hendrix connects the perceived value of labor in the commodity, in this case, lemons in her still life’s, and the art object itself to show the shared precarity of both types of labor, with respect to job insecurity, low wages, unpaid labor, and invisible labor.

Maria Laura Hendrix is a visual artist based in Ventura County. She earned a BA from California State University Northridge and is receiving her MFA-FA from Otis College of Art and Design. To view her previous work visit marialaurahendrix.com
