JULIA SOLAZZO
MFA Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition 2021
April 18 – April 22, 2021

The Bolsky Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design is pleased to present CORPUS_SEESAW, MFA Thesis Exhibition of artist Julia Solazzo. Her current work spans a diverse array of media, including video-performance, photography, painting, drawing and installation.

Solazzo’s practice teeters upon play, compulsion, production, and destruction. Dual systems, ordered by a body-mind-frame in space. Solazzo operates in a gap between internal and external, chaos and order, psychological and theoretical.

Julia reframes traditional notions of ‘the artist’s studio’ through embodied processes of art-production as necessitated-obsessive-doing. In her performative gestures, Solazzo utilizes site, scale, and perspective as modes of framing states of mind in fragmented realities. Her negotiations of spatial relativity carry over from her video-performance works to her photographic gestures. Whether in the dark room or the studio space, Solazzo’s practice is one of constant movement, change, and development. Production as site of the artists process translates into production as a means of embodied processing.

Growing through traditions of art passed down through familial generations, Solazzo has both leaned-into and challenged notions of ‘the artists hand,’ as well as the promotion and expectation of a final art commodity. For Julia, the process of making becomes not only the carrier and container for a work of art, but the art in and of itself.

Julia Solazzo (b. 1994) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Solazzo received her Bachelors of Arts from Pepperdine University in 2017, and will complete her graduate studies in May 2021, attaining her Masters of Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles.
