FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bolsky Gallery and Otis College of Art and Design is pleased to present America Stole My Tongue a exhibition of new work by Los Angeles based artist Xiouping The works form a narrative that only can be told by the artist merging and mixing mediums of performance, sound, video and sculpture. America Stole My Tongue investigates the silence of faded stories untold. Meditating on the diaspora of animacy, it aims to illuminate the ways a native tongue can be lost through extinction and annihilation. Languages are cultural archives and reserves of community identity. In assimilation they have historically been targeted for destruction. Viewers are invited to witness Protest II, a multi media installation including sound, photography, bullet shells, steel and other materials. Seedbed is a sculpture installation examining repository archiving and the relationship bracketed between the space of two videos, one with sound and one silent. It explores the tension between emergence and disappearance, and considers how what seems natural is often a cultural fabrication. Xiouping aka (TNT) Taiwanese & Texan is an American new genres artist, photographer, video, installation, and performance artist; as well as a writer and educator. She has BFA from San Francisco Art Institute, and will obtain an MFA from Otis College + Social Practice in Los Angeles in spring 2021. She has showed works in San Francisco, New York, LA and Mexico City. Currently she is the Host for the visiting artist lecture series at Otis College in Los Angeles and lives in Venice Beach.
