Animating Across Borders and Gender Divides

Meet Jacob Alqahtani (BFA Digital Media, Animation ‘17)

“I have four sisters, and when I was young, I was not supposed to play with girls,” says Dubai native Jacob Alqahtani (BFA Digital Media, Animation ‘17). “It’s a culture thing, but I didn’t like it. So I want to highlight the issue of gender separation.” Jacob, who specializes in character design, describes his idea for an animated feature film: “The story is about a boy and a girl who don’t get along, but through hardship and adventure across the mysterious Arabian deserts, they learn to get along in the end.”

As an international student, Jacob found a strong, supportive community at Otis College from the start. “Foundation year was a lot of work, but it was worth it because it built our skills,” he says. After he chose his major, he still felt close to classmates who went on to study other disciplines. “My experience at Otis College is like having a family,” he says. “We’re friends. Not only good friends, but friends that will be with me forever. You will see each other. You will work together, even if it’s in separate fields.”
