Art Talk’s Hunter Drohojowska-Philp recently reviewed Ralph Bacerra: Exquisite Beauty, currently on display at the Ben Maltz Gallery. Ralph Bacerra (1938-2008) was a noted ceramicist, known for his rich color glazes and elaborate embellishments. Exquisite Beauty, curated by Otis alumna Jo Lauria (MFA ’90), showcases over ninety of Bacerra’s eye-dazzling works and is the first retrospective to celebrate this visionary artist.
Blending influences from Japanese Imari with his native Los Angeles, Bacerra created a defining style that would go on to influence a new generation of artists. In addition to his own artistic practice, Bacerra was a passionate teacher. He served as chair of the ceramic program at Otis College of Art and Design from 1983 to 1996, and was previously head of ceramics at Chouinard from 1964 through 1971.
Ralph Bacerra: Exquisite Beauty continues through December 6. To listen to the Art Talk review, use the link below.
