Says Ferreira da Silva: “In this commentary, I consider the Brazilian artist Paulo Nazareth’s work as a demand that anti-colonial and anti-racist expressions be considered properly aesthetic. In his mode of presentation, I find a compositional strategy that comments on these currently political circumstances by confronting and undermining attempts at reading both his work and its intention as just another operation of cultural or racial difference. Through repetition, humor, and healthy dosages of the weirdness and urgency, Nazareth’s performances, photographs, sculptures, and installations request a sensibility that presumes and anticipates what lies beyond all that has been said and done about colonial and racial violence and the works they perform for global capital.”
Ferreira da Silva is an academic and practicing artist. Her work addresses the ethico-political challenges of the global present. She is the author of Toward a Global Idea of Race (University of Minnesota Press, 2007), A Dívida Impagavel (Oficina da Imaginaçāo Política and Living Commons, 2019), Unpayable Debt (Stenberg/MIT Press, 2021), and is co-editor (with Paula Chakravartty) of Race, Empire, and the Crisis of the Subprime (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). Her several articles have been published in leading interdisciplinary journals such as Social Text, Theory, Culture & Society, Social Identities, PhiloSOPHIA, Griffith Law Review, Theory & Event, and The Black Scholar, to name a few. Her artistic works includes the films Serpent Rain (2016) and 4Waters-Deep Implicancy (2018), in collaboration with Arjuna Neuman, and the relational art practices Poethical Readings and Sensing Salon, in collaboration with Valentina Desideri. She has exhibited and lectured at major art venues such as the Pompidou Center (Paris), Whitechapel Gallery (London), MASP (Sāo Paulo), Guggenheim (New York), and MoMa (New York). She has also written for publications for major art events (Liverpool Biennale, 2017; São Paulo Biennale, 2016; Venice Biennale, 2017; and Documenta 14) and published in art venues such as Canadian Art, Texte Zur Kunst, and E-Flux.
Funded through a generous gift from Mandy and Cliff Einstein, the Mandy and Cliff Einstein Visiting Artist Series provides Otis College students an opportunity to learn and engage directly with major figures in the art world today. The Critic-in-Residence position in the Fine Arts Department at Otis College of Art and Design has been in existence for 19 years. Each year, an outstanding critic is invited to be in residence, give a public lecture and engage with students, contribute to the cultural life of the campus and students, and represent the College to the Los Angeles community at large.
