A Conversation with Dawn Baillie ('86) - Creativity During Crises: Instilling Hope and Success as an Artist and Designer

Join us for a conversation with alumna and new Otis College Trustee, Dawn Baillie ('86), co-founding partner of BLT Communications where she will share her successful career trajectory as a designer and how she was motivated by her creativity and the knowledge she gained as an Otis College student to navigate an uncertain future.

Dawn Baillie

Dawn Baillie (BFA '86) is a co-founding partner of BLT Communications, an entertainment advertising design agency employing over 200 passionate artists, strategists, and technologists. Since 1992, BLT has created award-winning campaigns for hundreds of film, television, streaming, and Broadway productions. In addition to numerous Clio Entertainment and Hollywood Reporter Key Art Awards (including Best Poster of the Past 35 Years for Silence of the Lambs), Dawn was also honored with the inaugural Saul Bass Award, which recognizes talented creatives who demonstrate iconic and influential style.

In 2009, Dawn developed BLT Helps, a nonprofit arm dedicated to sharing BLT's wealth of experience and creative resources with organizations making a difference in their communities. BLT Helps was inspired by her humanitarian and spiritual visits to India, where she was taught the value of selfless service.

Dawn is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and joined the Otis College Board of Trustees in August 2020.

Visual Storytelling- Seeing the Visible & Invisible Workshop with Harry Mott

Do you want to see what few people ever see or notice? It's enjoyable and will make viewing more pleasurable for you.

Your family members at Otis learn how to look at the richness in visual storytelling. Now you can, too. There is so much more that is skillfully placed that we do not notice on the surface, yet we absorb these without noticing when watching films and TV. Let's take a deeper look at some scenes by the master filmmaker, Aikira Kurosawa. Then, we'll take a quick leap over to Comedy and find out what you need to make a successful comedy.

You now have homework! Please watch these clips before class. You can come to class even if you don't watch them, but it will be a nicer experience for you if you can watch them ahead of time. If you are ambitious (as most of my students are) take a few loose notes after you see each piece. What did you notice? What did you enjoy? Why? And so on. Bring the notes with you.
