Otis at Dwell on Design 2015

Last weekend Otis College of Art and Design exhibited selected work of students from the departments of Architecture/Landscape/Interiors and Product Design at the Dwell on Design show. Product Design presented work from juniors and seniors ranging from tea cups to furniture, while A/L/I exhibited images of various students’ work that represented the department’s disciplines and curriculum. The A/L/I display also included views of the senior class project that involved designing, fabricating, and installing a full-scale environment in their final semester of study. Installations from 2007, 2008, 2013, and 2014 were included.

Dwell on Design, America’s largest design event, is a three-day celebration that brings together the best and brightest products, services, and features over 350 exhibitors on the show floor and over 70 presentations on three separate stages.

This year at Dwell on Design Los Angeles, the Dwell Store hosted a pop-up store that featured design objects from emerging designers and acclaimed brands, alongside new products launching at the event in Los Angeles. Product Design alumna Melanie Abrantes ('12) had work featured in the store. Her Buckeye Burl Wood Bud Vase is a one-of-a-kind vase made from a solid piece of buckeye burl, a wood native to California. This wood has a distinctive grain that differs at every angle, making the vase a truly one-of-a-kind piece. Through the technique of lathing, the buckeye burl becomes smooth to the touch, giving this vase a soft feel when in hand. Although the event is over, the collection is now available at the Dwell Store.
