Host and LAS Faculty member, Marsha Hopkins, invites the Otis community to join Dr. Heather Joseph-Witham in the Civil Rights Lecture series, presenting on "Urban Legends, Conspiracy Theories, and Anti-Semitism," on November 4th at 9:00 a.m.

Urban legends about Jews have formed the basis for anti-Semitic beliefs, activities, artwork and even legislation over the centuries.  These narratives and the perspectives they reveal will be explored.

Heather Joseph-Witham is an Associate Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences Department at Otis.  She has a B.A. in Political Science and a Masters and PhD in Folklore and Mythology from UCLA.  Her subject matter is people and the meaning of why they believe and behave as they do. She explores folk art, culture, witches, fairy tales, vampires, UFO's and all things spooky. She has appeared as an expert on television to discuss hauntings, urban legends, myths, and more. Her publications include a book on Star Trek cosplay, articles about diversity and magic, and documentaries about aliens and vampires.  She loves being a folklorist.
