  • CLASS OF 2015 COMMENCEMENT!

    The 2015 Otis Commencement Exercises is scheduled for Sunday, May 10,  2015. The ceremony will be be held at 3:00pm locally at Westchester Park, due to limited space available on campus as a result of the Campus expansion project. Sustainable Toy Design in China

In 2004, toy company Hape hosted China's first UNESCO bamboo workshop. Hape's bamboo toys, the first collection of toys based on this natural resource, grew out of this UNESCO event. Since then, Hape and Founder/CEO Peter Handstein have offered an Annual Bamboo Workshop, inviting international design students to propose and create new ideas. The bamboo facility is in Zheijang, adjacent to their own renewable, sustainable, bamboo forest.

Toy Design is Serious Business

The LA TImes Business section featured Otis' toy design program, citing the abundance of talented designers, many of them Otis grads, as a reason for the prominence of the toy industry in Southern California. It accounts for 9,500 jobs in Los Angeles and Orange counties; and its 276 businesses contribute more than $53 million in annual taxes, according to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp.

Toy Design I/II

In these courses, students develop an understanding of the creative process of toy design. Emphasis is placed on developing toys that engage children in what is referred to in the toy industry as “play patterns.” Students apply skills in drawing, model making, and fabrication to create original toys that engage children in imaginative play and shape developmental skills and decision-making, socialization, and creativity. Students learn to conduct market research and analysis to insure that their designs are appropriate for the category of toys they are designing.
