Summer of Art Housing Overview

Connect with Your Peers

Living on campus allows you to bond with other artists, socialize with peers outside of the classroom, and experience college life! Roommates are determined by the answers you submit on your housing application. Roommate information is not available prior to check-in. If you already know someone joining the program and wish to room together, please reach out to our office (soahousing@otis.edu) for next steps! We honor all mutual roommate requests!

Supervision

Students are supervised by a team of live-in professional staff and Resident Assistants (RAs) ready to assist in an emergency situation. Current Otis College students serve as RAs for the Summer of Art program.

Residence Hall Programming

  • Our RAs reside on each floor of the Residence Hall and are fully trained to respond to emergencies, serve as resources, and assist students during Summer of Art.

  • RAs arrange programs and events for students in the evenings after class. Activities may include game nights, variety shows, crafts, dances, and more.

Off-Campus Programs & Field Trips

On weekends, students explore different parts of Los Angeles through organized field trips. Weekend trips are required for every residential student. Past trips have included Santa Monica Beach, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and Hollywood.

Important Information

Requirements

Students in high school or above, between 14.5 to 18 years of age, and enrolled in the 5-day program are eligible for housing. Summer of Art residential students are required to have the COVID-19 vaccine. Students enrolled in the Summer of Art academic program may apply for an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine requirement; however, exempted students may not live in housing for the duration of the program.

Curfew

All students living in the Residence Hall legally have a nightly curfew of 10:00 p.m. PDT. If students choose to leave campus during free time (4:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.), they must return to campus no later than 9:30 p.m. and be in their suite by 10:00 p.m. every night, including weekends. There are no exceptions. RAs will conduct bed checks nightly at 10:00 p.m. to ensure all students have returned from free time.

Free Time

Residential students have free time with no direct supervision by the Residence Life or Summer of Art team from 4:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and all day on Saturday and Sunday, except while on required weekend trips. If students wish to explore on their own, they are required to check out before leaving and use the buddy system. Students are not allowed to leave campus on their own. Upon return to campus, students are required to check in with a Resident Assistant or with Campus Safety and Security. Students are also required to download the Orah App in order to check in and out. Off-campus and overnight passes with family members must be requested in advance by emailing soahousing@otis.edu. Curfew and free time policies are subject to change.

Policies and Behavioral Standards

Students residing in on-campus housing must adhere to all policies, rules, regulations, and community standards set forth within the Summer of Art Handbook. The handbook is distributed to students approximately three months prior to the program start. Students in violation of any of the policies, rules, regulations, and community standards or otherwise create an unsafe or unproductive climate may be removed from the program and/or receive a failing grade of “F” at the Administrators’ sole and exclusive discretion. Participants in the Summer of Art program are not afforded due process in matters involving behavioral conduct, and outcomes of their violations of policies are decided upon at the discretion of Summer of Art administrators. Summer of Art students who have been admitted to Otis College may be subject to the student conduct process outlined in Otis College’s Code of Student Conduct, in addition to the Summer of Art conduct process.
