Bio/Affiliation

Patricia Fernández (b. Burgos, Spain; lives and works in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree) is an interdisciplinary artist with a research based practice that includes painting, sculpture and installation. Her work uses personal narrative and abstraction to transmit histories and build connections between people and places. Her interest in inter-generational dialogue, radical care, and inheritance often leads her to work with other people in some capacity. She creates material contexts to record encounters, memories and relationships via a labor-intensive practice, honoring the human bonds that sustain us. Recent work explores feminist, matriarchal value systems, including the queering of motherhood, as an antidote to western capitalist logic and the oppression of the patriarchy. Fernández received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from University of California, Los Angeles. She is a recipient of numerous awards including Otis College of Art and Design Faculty Development Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. She is represented by Commonwealth and Council in Los Angeles.
