Otis College of Art and Design’s BFA Fine Arts Department will present the 2023 Mandy and Cliff Einstein Visiting Artist Lecture featuring artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The artist’s in-person lecture will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Otis College faculty member Soo Kim.
Registration for the lecture is now open. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in The Forum auditorium in Otis College’s Goldsmith campus at 9045 Lincoln Boulevard in the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The artist and MacArthur fellow was born in Nigeria and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She has exhibited internationally in solo and group presentations in such venues as the National Portrait Gallery, London; Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington, D.C.; Fondazione Prada, Milan; Whitney Museum of American Art, The Drawing Center, and The Studio Museum in Harlem; New York; and MOCA and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Akunyili Crosby was also included in Prospect.4: The Lotus in Spite of the Swamp in New Orleans and May You Live in Interesting Times in the 58th Venice Biennale.
Funded through a generous gift from Mandy and Cliff Einstein, the Mandy and Cliff Einstein Visiting Artist Lecture Series provides Otis College students an opportunity to learn and engage directly with major figures in the art world today. Invited artists spend time with Otis students and give a free public lecture. Past guests have included Kara Walker, Edgar Heap of Birds, Shirin Neshat, Zoe Whitley, Jeffrey Vallance, Doug Aitken, and Anicka Yi.
About Njideka Akunyili Crosby
Njideka Akunyili Crosby was born in Enugu, Nigeria in 1983 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She was a participant in La Biennale di Venezia, 58th International Art Exhibition, May You Live In Interesting Times, curated by Ralph Rugoff (11 May–24 November 2019). Past and upcoming solo exhibitions include Contemporary Project: Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX (2022), and The Hilton Als Series: Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Yale Center for British Art (2022-2023). She is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Arts (2020), an Honorary Doctorate of Art from Swarthmore College (2019), a MacArthur Fellowship (2017), and a United States Artist Fellowship (2021).
